QT Newcastle opens its doors

QT Hotels & Resorts opens its first regional hotel with signature restaurant and rooftop bar, elevating Newcastle’s burgeoning travel and dining scene

Designer hotel QT Newcastle will open the doors to a new era on June 9, elevating Newcastle’s revitalised East End precinct.

Housed within the heritage listed 113-year-old former Scotts Limited and David Jones building on Hunter Mall, QT Newcastle draws cues from Newcastle’s rich history.  Luxuriously curated modern design tells the story of reflection and renewal, celebrating the coastline and city’s surrounds. The hotel’s signature restaurant Jana and rooftop bar, Rooftop at QT, complement QT’s stable of award-winning dining destinations.

QT Hotels & Resorts Group General Manager, Callum Kennedy, says “QT Newcastle is the latest evolution in the QT collection, and we’re thrilled to open the doors. QT Newcastle will live and breathe the same vibrancy and energy guests love from the world of QT, championing luxurious quirk and exciting collaborations in the Newcastle community. Rooftop at QT, boasting uninterrupted views across the harbour and signature restaurant Jana, led by Michelin star chef Massimo Speroni, will deliver the ultimate night out for locals and travellers. We are also delighted to have recruited a team of local talent that we welcome to the QT family”.

Journey into QT Newcastle
Guests will be greeted by the Directors of Chaos, an iconic presence at the doors of QT. Armed with insider knowledge for guests to navigate the coastal surrounds and elevate their stay, the Directors of Chaos are the first welcome of the QT experience.

The QT design team and long-time design collaborator, Nic Graham, have created a luxurious escape through a visual feast. Designed with new beginnings and renewal at the forefront, the hotel has reinvigorated an iconic heritage building, respecting and maintaining the raw shell and layering contemporary life within.

With an emphasis on first impressions, the art statements at QT Newcastle create impact and intrigue. The hotel embraces art at every touch point, enriching the bold and daring aesthetic to reflect the city’s nostalgic past and vibrant creative future.

The 104 guest rooms and suites feature industrial textures alongside brushed brass accents and designer furnishings, highlighting coastal drama, natural beauty, and QT’s penchant for the unexpected. Guests are invited to experience a renewed sense of discovery upon every visit.

A natural light filled sanctuary fixed in time within the building’s iconic dome and clock face steals the scene; the Clock Suite boasts uninterrupted harbour views, enhanced by the suite’s centrepiece restored in its former glory. A designer bathroom dripping in indulgent extras sits pride of place featuring a lavishly oversized bathtub surrounded in emerald green finery.

Elevated food and drink experiences

Nestled on the ground floor is signature restaurant Jana, offering an approachable, premium produce-led menu overseen by award winning Executive Chef Massimo Speroni. The menu features a familiarity of flavours, with dishes such as Hiramasa Kingfish with fresh citrus and Pukara Estate Lamb Backstrap with black garlic jus, sitting proudly alongside a premium steak offering, sourced entirely from local producers. Speroni’s Michelin starred experience, from San Domenico in Imola, Italy, and Café le Paillotes in Pescara offers an elevated twist on the modern Australian bar and grill, enjoyed in stunning restaurant surrounds with private and semi-private dining rooms, adorned with bold artwork and new world charm.

The jewel in the crown of QT Newcastle is the Rooftop at QT, boasting uninterrupted views across the harbour. Rooftop revelry meets innovative izakaya, with an extensive cocktail list complemented by a sophisticated local wine offering, and spirit collection featuring Newcastle’s largest library of Japanese Whisky.

QT has pioneered the philosophy of ‘expect the unexpected’, with every property delivering an experience which combines local influences and lashings of signature quirk, ensuring each hotel is a character in its own right.

IRIS Capital’s Chief Executive Officer Sam Arnaout says, “Newcastle is on the cusp of a new era of culture, undergoing rapid growth. QT Newcastle will be the centrepiece of the new East End village, forming part of the city’s future as a place for cutting edge innovation, with the charm of a beachside regional town.” QT Newcastle, Jana Restaurant and Bar and Rooftop by QT opens June 9, 2022.
